The borough of Tower Hamlets takes its name from the historical association between the Tower of London and its surrounding Hamlets. The area is historically rich and has been inhabited for over 2,000 years. Famous sites include Canary Wharf situated on the Southern boundary of London - the distinctive ''U bend'' in the river Thames. It is also home to the Tower of London where the Crown Jewels are kept, Tower Bridge (recently home to American illusionist David Blaine) and the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood - which has one of the world's largest collections of toys. Tower river frontage was the heart of the old London Docklands. The historic communities of the borough are Bethnal Green, Poplar, Bow and Stepney. A virtual new town has been created on the Isle of Dogs around Canary Wharf, a tremendous engine for growth. The most famous Tower Hamlets residents include: Marcus Garvey (Leader of the Back to Africa Black radical movement) who was buried here before his body was returned to Jamaica, Sir Walter Raleigh, John Willis (builder and owner of the Cutty Sark), Dr Barnardo, Henry Orbell (Founder Member of the Independent Labour party), The film director Sir David Lean, The Krays, Dizzee Rascal and Graham Norton. Best Schools: Primary - Bonner, Hague, Cubitt Town Junior; Secondary - Madni Girls, Sir John Cass Foundation and Redcoat CoE and Oaklands.
