Islington, the spiritual home of New Labour, has now moved on from its former stereotype as a haven for left-leaning media and creative types. Now its Victorian and Georgian terraces are more likely to be inhabited by Lawyers and hard-nosed business people. This is partly due to its easy access to the Docklands. Like many of the much gentrified areas of London, Islington boasts a wealth of bars, restaurants and specialist shops, while there is also access to culture in the form of theatres, art-house cinemas and design centres. Islington Borough has had many famous residents including: Charles Dickens, Evelyn Waugh, George Orwell, Douglas Adams, Benjamin Britten, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, Sir Walter Raleigh, Marie Stopes, Joe Orton, Sir John Betjeman, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and Tony Blair. The best schools are: Primary - St Peter and St Paul Roman Catholic, St John's Highbury Vale C of E, Prior Western and Clerkenwell Parochial C of E; Secondary - City of London (Boys and Girls Grammar Schools), Highgate Independent Boys Grammar and Francis Holland Girls Grammar.
