Smithfield is a very desirable place to live. Famous for the meat and poultry market and the world-renown Smith's restaurant, there are lots of other restaurants and the area is oozing with history. It is also haunted by the famous Cock Lane ghost, a supposed apparition, the vagaries of which attracted extraordinary public attention in London during 1762. The market was famously described by Dickens in Oliver Twist. The area called Bartholomew Fayre once offered fire-eaters, jugglers and tight ropewalkers and was the subject of a famous satire by Ben Johnson. There is more residential property available here than in St Paul's, it mainly consists of warehouse conversions and modern blocks. Smithfield is not only close to the City but also very well connected by tube.
Tubes: Farringdon, Barbican, St Paul's, City Thameslink.
