The Barbican is famous for the Barbican Arts centre and its associated housing development. This underground arts complex is the largest in Europe and houses a concert hall, two theatres, three cinemas and two art galleries. The Barbican consists of over 2,000 apartments housed in 21 blocks and is the largest development ever built by the City of London. People either love it or hate it. It is of course very convenient for commuting to the City. The development of the Barbican was started in the 1950s after the area was extensively bombed during the Second World War. In general, people either love or hate its bold, modernist style. One of the great features of the Barbican is the continuity afforded by the gardens and lakes, which, at the same time, give almost complete individuality to the blocks of flats throughout the estate. Every block has its own landscaped look. Many people move to the Barbican to be near the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the City of London School for Girls. This area is ideally situated for people working in the City.
